Abby loves brewing potions, but when she brews a friend-to-frog potion for her brother she finds she doesn’t know how to change him back. Abby has to find a way to help her brother before her grandmother finds out, or else she may be in big trouble.
Abby’s Potion Problem is an Idea I’ve been tossing around for a while. I’ve written multiple drafts of the story and am currently working on building a proper book dummy, this page features character artwork, style explorations, and page artwork that ranges from rough thumbnail to rough draft illustration.
This page is a WORK IN PROGRESS and DOES NOT represent the final work
Abby’s Potion Problem is an idea which I’ve been brainstorming for a few years now, here are some early concept sketches of Abby. Her hairstyle and my approach to drawing her has changed over time. She’s got more expression, and personality in the latest work but I think these demonstrate a strong range of possibilities for her character.
Abby’s Expression Sheet
This is the first test for the books cover. An early mood piece trying to capture the tone I wanted to achieve in the final artwork. This was also in a portrait format rather than the landscape format I ended up deciding on. I still love the font here and it’s helped inform some of the shape language I use through the rest of the interior art for the book.

While still a work-in-progress all images below denote stylistic intent and can be used to read the story, at least visually.
